Sun, Moon and rising sign: what each one means

When someone asks "what's your sign?", they mean your Sun sign. It is one piece of a much bigger picture. Astrologers start with three: the Sun, the Moon and the rising sign. Together they are often called the "big three".

Your Sun sign: who you are

The Sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun was in on the day you were born. It describes your core character: what drives you, what you are proud of, and where you put your energy.

The Sun stays in each sign for about a month, which is why you only need your birthday to know it. It is also why everyone born in the same month shares it.

Your Moon sign: how you feel

The Moon sign describes your inner world: what you need to feel safe, how you react when you are upset, and what comforts you. It is the side of you that the people closest to you know best.

The Moon moves fast. It changes sign roughly every two and a half days, so two people born in the same week can have different Moon signs. To be sure of yours, you need your date of birth, and sometimes the time as well.

For parents, the Moon sign is often the most useful part of a child's chart. It speaks to what a little one needs in order to settle: movement, quiet, routine or closeness.

Your rising sign: how you meet the world

The rising sign, also called the ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It describes your first impression: how you walk into a room, and how you approach anything new.

It changes about every two hours. That makes it the most personal of the three, and the reason the time of birth matters so much. The rising sign also sets the layout of the twelve houses in the rest of the chart.

Why you don't always feel like your sign

Many people read about their Sun sign and think "that isn't me". Usually the Moon or the rising sign explains it. Someone with a bold Sun in Leo and a careful Moon in Virgo will seem much quieter than a typical Leo description suggests.

The three signs are only the beginning. A full birth chart also places Mercury, Venus, Mars and the other planets, each in its own sign and house.

How to find yours

Astrology does not predict the future. These signs describe tendencies, and they are offered as a way to understand yourself and the people you love a little better.
